The 10 minute writer

Here are over 130 ten-minute writing exercises for you to dip into and enjoy. Approach these challenges with the minimal of mental preparation. Don't agonise over writing the "perfect" response; simply put pen to paper and start writing! Try carrying a notebook and paper with you, for the next time you find yourself with 10 minutes to fill waiting for the bus/train/doctor/etc.

Find a tree

Find yourself a tree and stand beneath its spreading limbs. Lean against its trunk. Touch it, smell it, feel its vast there-ness against your body. Close your eyes and imagine something that happened right here. What was it? TASK Write for 10 minutes, beginning with the words "The tree..."

The 10 minute writer: My primary focus – and joy – is helping others realise their full potential as writers. I am a creative writing teacher, musician, award-winning features writer, editor and songwriter. I have written dozens of songs, released four CDs and I know only too well the feeling of frustration when inspiration won't come. In a past life, I was the WA State editor for Gourmet Traveller magazine, Food and Wine Editor for Scoop magazine and the restaurant critic for Post Newspapers. I was also the inaugural programme director for the Mundaring Truffle Festival. In 2013, a run-in with breast cancer put me off my stride for a bit. When I got to the other side of a double mastectomy, I found I'd lost my passion for food writing. Instead, I wanted a more sincere, heartfelt way to help others develop and gain confidence in their creativity.
