Here are over 130 ten-minute writing exercises for you to dip into and enjoy. Approach these challenges with the minimal of mental preparation. Don't agonise over writing the "perfect" response; simply put pen to paper and start writing! Try carrying a notebook and paper with you, for the next time you find yourself with 10 minutes to fill waiting for the bus/train/doctor/etc.

Where are you
This is an exercise I was taught by musician and songwriter extraordinaire, Kristina Olsen. TASK On a piece of paper, make two columns. Imagine yourself to be somewhere – on your roof, in a doctor's waiting room, on the bottom of the ocean, etc. In the first column, write down 10 things that you can see from where you are sitting/standing in your imagined place, i.e., "Shell", "Milk bottle", etc. Now think of a profession and in the second column write down 10 verbs that pertain to that profession, i.e., "cut", "sweep", etc. Take a look at your lists and see how many juicy combinings in the context of a sentence you can come up with - i.e., "The shell cuts the ocean floor with its vivid colour".
